About the CUB Study
Exploring the Impact of Prenatal Cannabis
Use on Children’s Brain Development
Although cannabis use has increased among pregnant and non-pregnant people nationwide, there is still limited and often conflicting scientific data available to help future parents understand the risks and benefits associated with using cannabis while pregnant.
Our Research
The purpose of the CUB Study is to improve our understanding of brain development in infants whose mothers used cannabis during pregnancy, and in those whose mothers did not.
Through blinded observational and neurobehavioral measures, we follow participants from their first trimester of pregnancy through their child’s first 18 months of life.
What to Expect as
a Participant
Visits & Involvement
Participants will complete six in-person visits at the University of Washington. Those in the cannabis group will also complete weekly surveys during pregnancy to track cannabis use.
Location
All visits take place at the University of Washington Seattle campus. Participants must reside in Washington or Oregon.
Compensation & Benefits
Participants receive $350 or more in compensation,
copies of your child’s brain scan, and developmental
feedback reports from a licensed clinician. Some
participants may also qualify for travel reimbursement.
Study Timeline
Three Pregnancy Visits
Three visits during pregnancy, one per trimester
Newborn Visit
One visit when your baby is 2-4 weeks old, including an MRI scan and behavioral assessment
6 Month Visit
Questionnaires and developmental assessments with your child
18 Month Visit
Questionnaires and developmental assessments with your child
